1. Do you work with students with Learning Disabilities?
Working with students with Learning Disabilities is one of our areas of expertise. Our Founder and President has worked for the Learning Disabilities Association of Canada and the Learning Disabilities Association of Nova Scotia providing programming and implementing national initiatives. Ms. AuCoin was a contributor on a national publication: "RoadMap for Learning Disabilities for Employers". She currently sits on the National Learning Disabilities Association PACFOLD committee (Putting a Canadian Face on Learning Disabilities). As a result, she continues to collaborate with leaders in the field of LD in Canada. In addition, she has been trained and has trained staff in utilizing evidence-based methods for students with reading, writing and math disorders.
2. Are your programs one-on-one or group based?
In terms of tutoring, our philosophy is that every child deserves an individualized plan with a qualified teacher. Their time should not be shared with another student. They need tailored learning plans. They need a safe and confidential environment. They need to feel that they can talk and ask questions without having their peers present. We have seen the difference between one on one and group tutoring and know that one on one is more effective.
3. Do you use qualified educators for tutoring?
All staff have completed university educations. Some staff have B.Ed's, Masters degrees in Education, Masters in Sciences and have lectured and taught in universities; some have taught in Bilingual programs and community centres; and others have Endorsements and certificates in Adult Education.
4. Are you accessible? We provide accommodations for our programs including modifications for: reading, writing, sight, hearing, processing, social interaction and fine/gross motor. Our headquarters is on the main level of an accessible building with accessible doors, including our entrance and washrooms.
5. Is there a set number of hours required for obtaining tutoring? The answer is no. We know that the more tutoring a student has, the better. There is no denying that. However, we also know that in this day and age, money is tight and with inflation, parents are struggling to fund all of the services and extracurricular activities necessary for their child. We believe that with the right advice, regular practice and consistency of a minimum of one hour per week, a difference can be made. But, students have to attend consistently and practice at home. Do we recommend more than 1 hour per week? Of course. But, we appreciate the importance of feasibility.
6. How do Refresher programs work? They can be delivered virtually or in person (depending on the area). These courses are designed for groups mainly, but can be tailored for individual students. The goal is to provide a curriculum review of fundamental skills. It is ideal for the adult (or group of adults) who may have been out of school for awhile or who has/have never taken post-secondary training and need skills before taking the career training. We have great options. We recommend a free consultation first to establish what your group might need and then we help you work toward your goal.
