A Student's Literacy Development Begins Here
LearnAbility's Specialized Approach:
Structured literacy is a teaching approach that emphasizes explicit and systematic instruction in phonology, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. This approach is especially beneficial to children with Learning Disabilities, who have difficulties in decoding words, spelling, and reading comprehension. The structured literacy approach provides a structured and cumulative path to learning that builds on students' prior knowledge and gradually introduces new concepts.
Our programs incorporate research-based strategies:
"The science of reading refers to a body of research from the fields of education, cognitive psychology, developmental psychology, and neuroscience, that explains how individuals learn how to read and best practices for reading instruction. Recent advances in technology and a greater understanding of neurobiology have allowed researchers and practitioners who work with typical and struggling readers to understand how reading develops in the brain and the skills that contribute to proficient reading." (Jenner, Dr. Kate, Indiana Department of Education, 2023)
For over 18 years, LearnAbility has provided an effective way to help children with reading disorders and other students who need explicit and systematic instruction in reading and writing.

Reading Comprehension
Reading Comprehension is among one of the hardest skills to teach. It requires more than reading and asking questions. Reading Comprehension can be impacted by any number of things including: attention, memory, processing or dyslexia. We have a formula for building comprehension that was developed from years of research, observation and implementation. Our students learn to think and understand differently. Although there are a variety of strategic approaches used for building reading comprehension, one of our most common offerings is Visualizing and Verbalizing.

Phonological and Phonemic Awareness Development
Research has shown that children who struggle with phonological awareness are more likely to experience difficulties in reading and writing. Phonological awareness is a key foundational skill that supports the development of other literacy skills, such as decoding, spelling, and comprehension. LearnAbility staff are trained in and integrate the Lindamood Phoneme Sequencing program and the Lindamood Seeing Stars program.
